Oxbow Park & Zollman Zoo
One of Olmsted County's premier natural areas sits just 3.5 miles north of Byron. The 634-acre park runs along the Middle Branch of the South Fork Zumbro River, with wooded bluffs, river bottom, and prairie edges that feel a world away from Highway 14.
The free-admission Dr. Paul E. Zollman Zoo houses over 30 native Minnesota species, including wolves, bison, black bears, river otters, eagles, and a mountain lion. In winter, the trails convert to cross-country ski and snowshoe routes, and the 2-acre natural playground keeps kids busy year-round.

The Story of Byron
Before the town was laid out, a small community called Bear Grove sat just west of present-day Byron. What followed is a classic Minnesota railroad-town story: a plat, a depot, a post office, and a century and a half of steady growth from farming community to one of Olmsted County's fastest-growing cities.
George W. Van Dusen lays out the town and names it after his birthplace of Byron, New York.
The Winona and St. Peter Railroad reaches town, connecting Byron to Kasson and sparking early growth along the line.
Byron gets its own post office, cementing the young settlement's place on the map.
Byron incorporates as a city on February 12, 1873.
The 1938 City Hall is built, and it still stands today at Byron Avenue and 4th Street.
