Since 1873

The Story of Byron

Before the town was laid out, a small community called Bear Grove sat just west of present-day Byron. What followed is a classic Minnesota railroad-town story: a plat, a depot, a post office, and a century and a half of steady growth from farming community to one of Olmsted County's fastest-growing cities.

1864
Byron Is Platted

George W. Van Dusen lays out the town and names it after his birthplace of Byron, New York.

1865
The Railroad Arrives

The Winona and St. Peter Railroad reaches town, connecting Byron to Kasson and sparking early growth along the line.

1868
Post Office Established

Byron gets its own post office, cementing the young settlement's place on the map.

1873
Officially Incorporated

Byron incorporates as a city on February 12, 1873.

1938
The Historic City Hall

The 1938 City Hall is built, and it still stands today at Byron Avenue and 4th Street.

Today
A Growing Hometown

Byron has evolved from a small farming community into one of Olmsted County's fastest-growing residential cities, without losing the small-town character that started it all.
